The move from school to further education can be daunting. all of a sudden you’re given not only more freedom but new and complex problems to solve.

Beyond that, you’re also starting to branch out into the first few steps of adulthood, and meeting new people in an unfamiliar place.

With this in mind you can really grow as a person and have an excellent time at college if you adhere to some simple rules.

Go lightly: Don’t be too hard on yourself. Don’t forget you’re still young and you have the rest of your life ahead of you. Always keep a calm and relaxed temperament when confronted with the new challenges in life. Be pragmatic: Don’t succumb to laziness or procrastination and put off things you don’t find easy. Naturally there’s going to be times you feel out of synch with both your work and others around you. Everyone experiences this from time to time, become comfortable with taking responsibility for your actions, health and mental wellbeing. If you feel like you’re struggling, instead of getting down make a determined effort to deal with it and find solutions to your problems. For example: If you’re confronted with something challenging in class and you don’t understand it, instead of dwelling on it or ignoring it, make a note of your problem and either look it up or ask your lecturer at the end of the lesson. You’ll get a better grasp and understanding and give you a better viewpoint upon your studies.

Set yourself goals and targets that enthuse you and are obtainable: You know better than anyone how well you are coping with the content. If you feel like you are working to the maximum extent of your abilities, yet you are struggling to reach the grades that you want, perhaps it’s time to reconsider what you think is a ‘good grade’. College work is all relative. You shouldn’t feel pressure from anyone else regarding the grades you are getting. It’s the same principle as weightlifting. You don’t increase your strength by picking up the heaviest weights in the gym and lifting them once. You have to build it up gradually. Forget what everyone else is doing and focus on cultivating your own learning style.
