What You Need In Order To Obtain Your LPN Certification Near You
LPN stands for licensed practical nurse. In some parts of the country, LPNs are referred to as LVNs or licensed vocational nurses. Going through LPN training is a good way to get involved in the medical field as quickly as possible. LPN programs take any where from one year to two years to complete.
If you decide to go through LPN training, you have some choices earlier generations of nurses didn’t have. For instance, you can choose to take your classes in a brick-and-mortar environment such as a community college or training center, or you can take classes online at one of the many respected online universities such as National American University (NAU) or Walden University. Wherever you complete your coursework, you will have to go through a clinical program in your area. The clinical program allows you to practice the techniques you are learning on actual patients.
Before jumping into any old LPN program, it’s important to ask some questions. The first thing you want to be sure of is that the school you will be attending is accredited. Attending an unaccredited school will disqualify you for most types of financial aid and make it difficult, if not impossible, to obtain your license to practice nursing. Speaking of financial aid, don’t hesitate to check into any grants or scholarships offered by the schools you would like to attend. You can also obtain student loans and work study permits by filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid available online. It’s not a bad idea, either, to make sure that the school you select helps students locate a clinical setting–some schools leave it up to you to do that. And, if you’re new to the job-hunting arena, choose a school that offers students help finding jobs after they graduate.
After you have finished the LPN program and achieved passing grades on all of your classes and clinicals, you will take a federal exam known as the LPN NCLEX certification exam. You cannot practice nursing until you pass this test. Students take the test by computer. It generally takes up to five hours to finish all the questions. If you fail the exam the first time around, don’t despair. There is no limit as to how often you can take the exam. The only rule is that each attempt must be at least 91 days after any previous attempts.
After passing the exam, and fulfilling any additional requirements to be licensed in the state where you will be practicing, you will be able to practice as an LPN. Some of your tasks may include checking vital signs and reporting any anomalies to the RN (registered nurse) in charge, giving medications including most injections, gathering lab samples such as blood, urine or feces, and helping patients with mobility to and from bed and with personal hygiene.
As an LPN, you may work in many different settings including doctor’s offices, urgent care clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. You may also go into patient’s homes to help people whose illnesses or injuries prevent them from getting to the doctor.
If you enjoy working as a nurse, but would like a higher salary and more career opportunities, you may want to take an LPN to RN program. These programs allow candidates to skip course work they have already completed as part of getting their LPNs and thus graduate more quickly than they would if they were starting with no medical background. Some employers pay at least part of the cost for LPN to RN programs, so if you are working in the field as an LPN, ask your employer if they sponsor such a program.
You will find more information in this regard by visiting the particular field you may be interested in. Instructors will educate, show and appraise the prospective LPNs competency when it comes to performing LPN procedures. The reason for attending LPN school instead is because this program only lasts a year. lpn training pa
