Colleges award scholarships for merit. Usually that means academic excellence, but that isn’t the only criteria for financial aid awarded to high school students. While not as common, there are also a number of scholarships awarded for charitable or similar efforts that are above and beyond the norm. They are usually referred to as scholarships for good citizenship.

Fundamentally, good citizenship scholarships come from the concept that a good deed should be rewarded. There is a more grounded belief running through this though; good citizens overall make good students. They are hard working. They are diligent in their studies. One could also say that with advanced education they will go on to do more good, maybe even great, works for the public at large.

In general, it’s also been found that the recipients of this form of financial aid usually started out early. While this doesn’t mean they go out of their way to sacrifice themselves, they also usually do their efforts with the aid, or the endorsement, of a government organization or independent social group of benevolent society.

What is of the utmost importance is it be exceptional. It’s one thing to ladle out food and clothing to the homeless. Anyone can do that. On the other hand if you organize a food or clothing drive – and do incredibly well with it on a regular basis – you’ll get noticed. From there, make sure the work is recognized, particularly by groups that hand out these kinds of scholarships. The good news is most of these groups, such as the Elks Lodge, may be national in scope, but award the scholarships on the local level, usually from a local chapter. As it happens, there are virtually hundreds of organizations who hand out the awards, many of them from universities themselves. Also be aware of any restrictions that come with the scholarship. For instance, some do require a minimum grade point average whether the scholarship is applied to a local brick and mortar or online college.

The amount of these scholarships probably won’t pay an entire tuition, yet, there are many that can add up to several thousand dollars. There are others that will only come to $100 a year. They might still require a certain grade point average, such as a 2.5 GPA. What is good though is they usually don’t interfere with such grants as the Pell. After all, they are more or less rewards for exceptional behavior.

Yet, as said before, it’s always good to remember that exceptional good deeds should have exceptional rewards. Like college scholarships, a good citizenship scholarship award is given for merit.
